Each of us is a warrior, a protector of patterns that we use to avoid feelings. Reactions come in to play whenever we sense the vulnerability of our roundedness consciously or unconsciously. The patterns are often linked to duty, honor, loyalty, discipline. Occasionally they look like courage, but fall apart under deeper scrutiny.

Almost everyone has some addictive pattern. Any reflexive response to stress or anxiety wether conscious or not is a form of addiction. The chief motive of any addiction, of course, is to help one not feel what in fact one is already feeling. Breaking the tyranny of addiction will require one to feel the pain that addiction defends against. No wonder then that addictive patterns have such staying power as flimsy faultering defense againt primal wound.
